'Migration' - Group Exhibition
St Augustine's Tower, The Narroway (Mare Street), Hackney E8 1HR 29 September - 4 October 2015 To coincide with Art Licks Weekend 2015, Iris are presenting a group exhibition in Hackney's oldest building, a Grade I listed 13th Century tower located in St John's Churchyard, next to the Narroway, Mare Street. Taking over the four floors of St Augustine’s Tower, this group show features new work in printmaking, painting, sculpture and installation by local artists responding to the theme of migration. The artists come from diverse backgrounds and share their own experiences of migration both from outside the UK and within it, from escaping war zones, to economic migration, moving for study or simply for adventure. The work aims to explore the effect of migration - whether temporary or long term - on places; the effect of leaving on those left behind; the effect of returning to one's place of origin; the effect of new arrivals on established communities, and the subsequent impact on the man-made and natural environment. The theme is also explored in its broadest context to include ideas on migration in both human, animal and plant life, even touching on migration in a metaphysical sense. The venue itself will also become an integral part in the works created. Being the oldest building in Hackney, the tower has been witness to more of the comings and goings of Hackney residents than any other. The exhibition aims to present alternative viewpoints on the migration theme - an ever-present topic in today's media. Please Note: There is limited disabled access due to the nature of the building, having many steps. |
Loretta GarrisonGarrison is in the early
stages of her artistic practice, which is presently focussed on printmaking.
She enjoys creating experimental landscapes and objects that depict movement and change. |
Alison HaworthHaworth is a sculptor working in mixed media with a keen obsession with inter-relationships. She has recently been looking particularly at the play between light and shadow, density and lightness. Working with natural and synthetic materials, particularly wire, thread, slip clay and paper, she focuses on the processes involved in construction.
Haworth's work explores inter-relationships through folding, enfolding, building, unravelling and reflection. |

Jasmin TopalusicTopalusic’s work contains an obsessive need for identification with or the personification of its surroundings. This leads her to consider how the use of everyday objects can be employed to explore ideas of representation and embodiment, which often leans towards hallucination. Her practice includes printmaking, animation, photography, sculpture and installation.
